What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening number calculated from your height and weight: BMI = weight(kg) ÷ height(m)². It sorts people into ranges — underweight, normal, overweight, and obese — and gives a quick sense of whether your weight is in a generally healthy zone for your height.

BMI categories

  • Under 18.5 — Underweight
  • 18.5–24.9 — Normal (healthy) weight
  • 25–29.9 — Overweight
  • 30 and above — Obese

The limits of BMI

BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. Because it only uses height and weight, it can misclassify muscular people as “overweight” and doesn't account for age, sex, ethnicity, or where you carry fat. Use it as a starting point, not the last word — and consult a healthcare professional for a full assessment.

What to do with your BMI

If you want to change your weight, the next step is a calorie target. Use our calorie calculator to find your TDEE and daily goal, then track consistently. MyBiteIQ makes logging painless with AI photo scanning and syncs your weight trend to Apple Health so you can see real progress over weeks — not just react to a single day on the scale.
